OPUS MANUFACTUM

Bachelor Project Communication Design | Received “Best Work” at the Graduation

The graduation project

The Project OPUS MANUFACTUM explores the trend and value brought by the reintroduction of hand-made components into the user-object relationship. To exemplify this, Croatian folklore dresses, their embroidery  and surrounding manufacturing practices were portrayed during this research project.

The art of handmade goods

There is a certain pride in owning traditional clothing & hand-made objects. The methods of storing and the emotive care that goes into their upkeep are long established traditions.

Therefore I spend a month in Slavonia (East-Croatia) learning about the vanishing craftsmanships e.g. weaving of clothes & embroidery to make a photo documentation.

The Exhibition

The exhibition for the project includes a woven cloth, a hand-bound book which contains the photo documentation and further elaborates on the depicted topics, a hand stitched-banner, a hand-made podium which shows the photo series and a printed photo out of the documentation (LTR).

As a goodie the exhibition contains stickers for the visitors to take along.

The Thesis

A design discourse: In between craftsmanship und identity. From industrial misclassification to change in awareness in the design production.

The recurring trend of hand-made goods was studied to reintroduce hand-made aspects in the design process as a beneficial value regarding production & user-object-identity.
